AI Research Tools and Deep Research (October 2026)

Deep research agents plan sub-questions, read dozens of sources and return a cited report in minutes. Academic tools search paper databases the open-web agents can't reach. Use both, and treat every citation as a lead to check, not a fact.

Workflow

  1. Scope the questionName the time range, population or market, and what the output should look like (tables, sections).
  2. Map the fieldPerplexity for a fast overview; Elicit or Consensus for the academic literature; ResearchRabbit to widen from good seed papers.
  3. Write the long reportRun ChatGPT Deep Research or Gemini with your scope, or load your own PDFs into NotebookLM for grounded answers.
  4. Stress-testAsk the tool for its three weakest claims, then check those first. Use Scite to see if key papers were later contradicted.
  5. Read before you citeOpen every source you cite. AI summaries and extractions still contain errors.
