AI for Excel and Google Sheets (October 2026)

Start with the AI built into the spreadsheet your company already pays for: Copilot if you're on Microsoft 365, Gemini if you're on Google Workspace. Specialist tools earn their place for code-backed analysis, bulk text tasks or live data pulls. Every one of them can write a formula that looks right and isn't.

Workflow

  1. Use what you already licenseCopilot on Microsoft 365, Gemini on Workspace. Try the included features before buying an add-on.
  2. Pick one weekly choreA recurring rollup, a dedupe, a category column. Give the AI one well-defined job first.
  3. Design on fake dataIf you prototype in a personal AI account, use a sample with the same columns and made-up values.
  4. Check three rows by handBefore filling a formula down, compute three or four rows yourself. Off-by-one ranges are the classic failure.
  5. Run on a copyAnything that deletes or overwrites runs on a duplicate first. Spot-check two or three report numbers against the source.

Combinations that work

CombinationWhy
General AI for the plan + Copilot/Gemini for the editWork out the approach in chat, then do the real edit inside the company tenant so the file never leaves it.
Gemini in Sheets + pivot tableLet AI tag each row, then count tags with a pivot.
Julius answer + manual checkFast exploration, but numbers going to a board deck need a human recompute.
